About Us

George’s Taverna is not a corporate or franchise restaurant, but it is a labour of love. The restaurant is under new management whilst still in corporation with George the founder!
Below are George’s words about himself and the restaurant.

Greeting, my friends!
Welcome to George’s Taverna – “The Meeting Place”

In August 1982, I arrived in B.C. from Crete, the largest island of Greece, to spend an extended holiday with my uncle. I did not speak any English at that time, however, over the years, my English improved through the many friends and acquaintances that I have met in addition to residing with my relatives already living in Vancouver.

My first job experience was working as a dishwasher in the cafeteria at UBC. I then went on to work in construction, renovation and painting plus a part time bouncer. I was married with a child on the way and financial commitments kept me very busy.

One evening, while I was sitting in my backyard with my brother in law, I spoke of my dream – to own my own restaurant. By the year 2000, my dream would become a reality. I already had a spot in mind, which would combine the fond memories that I have of the small fishing village in Crete with friendly atmosphere of the village here is Steveston.

Over the years, I collected the many treasures which you see around you (in the restaurant). My wife used to comment that as these items increased, so too would the space to which they were stored. However, we did agree that the boat you see above you had to remain in the backyard (in front of the restaurant). Her name, 511, cost me more to remove that I had initially paid for it so many years ago.

On October 1, 1998, with a smile on my face and keys in hand, I set out on a seven and a half month journey renovating, rebuilding and painting – my employment history finally paid off. It also provided me with the determination and strength to achieve my goal: this restaurant which you are now enjoying. I remember well and appreciate the many people who stopped by the check up on my progress and to nourish me with companionship, encouragement and yes – curiosity.

My gratitude goes to my wife, Penny, who not only supported and encouraged me in my journey, but for her understanding of many late nights. Special thanks to my faithful assistant, Barry O’Rourke. Thank you to my relatives, friends, and my acquaintances, you all know who you are – without you “George’s Taverna” would not be here today.
Enjoy yourselves and soak up the Greek atmosphere.

See you again soon!

I am grateful for the never ending love and support from my two children Evan and Crystal!

Yiasou!(Greek for “cheers”)
